The Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) Admiral (ADM) Naris Pratoomsuwan was conferred Singapore's prestigious military award, the Pingat Jasa Gemilang (Tentera) [or Meritorious Service Medal (Military)], by President Halimah Yacob. Senior Minister of State for Defence Mr Heng Chee How presented the award to ADM Naris at an investiture held at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) this morning.
ADM Naris was conferred the award for his significant contributions in strengthening the close and long-standing defence relations between Thailand and Singapore. Bilateral defence relations between the RTN and the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) have strengthened under ADM Naris' leadership. Both navies engage in regular professional exchanges and cooperation such as the Admirals Interaction Programme, Navy-to-Navy Staff Talks, and the biennial bilateral exercise codenamed Ex Singsiam. ADM Naris also supported both navies' cooperation in maritime security and information sharing. These interactions have strengthened professional and people-to-people links between the two navies.
Under ADM Naris' leadership, the RTN played a leading role in enhancing mutual trust among ASEAN navies. The RTN also hosted the International Fleet Review to celebrate ASEAN's 50th anniversary and the inaugural ASEAN Multilateral Navy Exercise last year. These interactions have improved mutual cooperation and interoperability amongst ASEAN navies.
ADM Naris, who is in Singapore from 1 to 5 August 2018, also called on Mr Heng, Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Melvyn Ong and Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral Lew Chuen Hong after reviewing a Guard of Honour contingent at MINDEF earlier today.
ADM Naris will also be attending the table-top exercise for the ASEAN-China Maritime Exercise tomorrow and the 12th ASEAN Navy Chiefs' Meeting on 4 August 2018.
