Miss Cheng Li Hui: To ask the Minister for Defence (a) what is the percentage of military camps that currently tap on renewable sources of energy such as solar energy to generate power; (b) whether it is feasible to install solar panels in military camps; and (c) if so, whether there are plans to do so.
Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen:
MINDEF and the SAF will do our part to contribute towards the Singapore Green Plan 2030. We will meet the national targets set, without compromising operational effectiveness. On the use of renewable energy sources, we have plans to tap on solar energy.
We have begun installation of solar panels in suitable areas within military camps. By April next year, about 1 in 4 of our camps will have solar panels installed. These solar panels will deliver approximately 20 mega-watt peak of electricity, equivalent to the consumption of about 5,000 four-room households. By 2025, the adoption will expand to close to two-third of our military camps, generating 50 mega-watt peak of electricity.
