The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) commemorated SAF Day at a parade officiated by President Halimah Yacob at SAFTI Military Institute (SAFTI MI) this evening.
President Halimah presented the State Colours to this year's Best Combat Unit, 1st Commando Battalion, as well as new Regimental Colours to Headquarters SAF Ammunition Command, Headquarters Supply, Headquarters Transport and Army Deployment Force. The four new Regimental Colours were consecrated at a ceremony prior to the parade.
Around 350 SAF servicemen participated in the physical parade, which was conducted safely with stringent Safe Management Measures in place. Through video livestreaming via the Ministry of Defence's social media channels, other Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen), Full-time National Servicemen and Regulars joined the parade. Companies and organisations such as the Association for Small and Medium Enterprises, Singapore Manufacturing Federation, Surbana Jurong and various trade chambers also held their own in-house rededication ceremonies and joined in the recitation of SAF Pledge virtually via video conferencing and social media livestreaming.
Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General (LG) Melvyn Ong led SAF personnel in reciting the SAF pledge to reaffirm their loyalty to Singapore and their commitment to its defence. Commending the SAF's steadfast commitment to the defence of Singapore, LG Ong said, "Today, we reaffirm our commitment to our nation, pledging to always be there for Singapore and Singaporeans. Regardless of today's disruptions or tomorrow's challenges, the SAF stands ready to defend Singapore's peace and security."
During the parade, Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen delivered the SAF Day Message in a recorded video to commend the servicemen and women of the SAF for their resourcefulness, grit and commitment to stand ready to serve the nation whenever required despite the uncharted territory of COVID-19. He acknowledged their exemplary efforts and professionalism, and said, "The way SAF servicemen and women have responded to this pandemic gives me full confidence that indeed we have and will emerge stronger together against all threats."
Also present at the parade were the three Service Chiefs, Chief of Army Major-General Goh Si Hou, Chief of Air Force Major-General Kelvin Khong Boon Leong, and Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral Aaron Beng Yao Cheng.
