New Work-Study Diploma for NSFs

Our incoming Full-Time National Servicemen (NSFs) now have an attractive new opportunity – to earn a diploma while serving their National Service!

Earlier this week, the RSAF and the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to launch a Work-Study Diploma (WSDip) in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, allowing ITE graduates to serve as Air Force Technicians during their National Service while attaining a Diploma at the same time. This programme will see NSFs committing to a minimum of three years in service, with six months in basic and vocational training before embarking on the 2.5 years WSDip programme. The programme, with its first batch beginning in Apr 2021, aims to pave the way for graduates to either sign on as an Air Force Engineer (Maintenance) with the RSAF, or pursue a career in the aerospace industry. The RSAF signee for the agreement was Head Air Engineering and Logistics Department, ME7 Timothy Yap.

Chief of Air Force, MG Kelvin Khong, who was the witnessing officer for the RSAF, said, “The Work-Study Diploma programme allows ITE graduates to continue building on what they have learnt while serving NS. They will be able to upgrade their skills and qualifications while serving in operational roles in the RSAF at the same time. This will also open up career pathways for them in the aerospace industry after they complete their NS duties with the RSAF."

Chief Instructor of the course, ME5 Tay Lai Heng, shared that the programme was designed in close collaboration with industry partners to meet industry standards, “We also benchmark it against aviation standards to strike the right balance between work and study requirements. We wanted to design a Technical Diploma course that possesses its own uniqueness, meets aviation standards, while receiving recognition from our partners.”

PTE Poh Jun Han, an Air Force Technician trainee who is looking to sign up for the WSDip programme, also shared, “Not only am I able to pick up the relevant skills through the WSDip, I am also able to earn remuneration by working as an Air Force Technician, while serving my nation at the same time.” He is also looking to sign on as a regular upon completion of the programme.
