2013/2014 CDF Essay Competition Winners





The CDF Essay Competition 2013/2014 Prize Presentation was held just before the Joint Staff Conference (JSC) at MINDEF HQ on Monday, 20 October 2014. Winners received their awards from CDF, LG Ng Chee Meng, to great applause from the gathered senior leadership. The winners were:




First Prize - $1,500 award and plaque

MAJ Phua Chao Rong, Charles (Joint) and ME5 Seah Ser Thong, Calvin (Army) for their essay Learning from Mother Nature: Biomimicry for the next Generation SAF.


Second Prize - $1,000 award and plaque 

  • MAJ Lee Hsiang Wei (Air Force) for his essay Cyber Deterrence? Don't Bother. 


Third Prize - $500 award and a plaque

  • CPT Ren Jinfeng (Air Force) for his essay Armed Forces and Societies: Implications for the SAF.


Merit Awards - $300 award and a plaque

  • LTA Lim Guang He (Air Force) for his essay Cyberspace: What Prospective for the SAF?

  • MAJ Choy Yong Cong (Army) for her essay Beyond Vulnerability to Resilience: A Different SAF for the Modern Strategic Context

  • CPT Ng Zhaohong Jeffrey (Air Force) for his essay Illuminating Human Biases in the Intelligence Cycle

  • LTC Xu Geyuan Marcel (Air Force) for his essay The United States' Entangled Alliances in the Asia Pacific and What It Means to Singapore

  • CPT Lim Ming Liang (Army) for his essay Hype or Reality: Putting the Threat of Cyber Attacks in Perspective

  • LTC Loh Woon Liang (Air Force) for his essay The Viability of Non-Offensive Defence (NOD) as a Strategy for Singapore's National Security

  • ME5 Seah Ser Thong, Calvin and ME4 (NS) Lee Wei Liang, Jerome (Army) for their essay The Nuclear Renaissance


Commendation Awards - $300 award

  • MAJ Benson Chian (Navy) for his essay Should the SAF maintain its exisiting focus on Full-Spectrum Dominance or should the organisation return to its Core Deterrence and War-Fighting Mission

  • MAJ Chandran s/o Nadarajoo (Army) for his essay Nuclear Armament: Is there a Rivalry and Race between the Dragon and the Elephant?

  • LTC Kwan Boon Wah (Navy) for his essay The Malacca Straits Patrols - Effective or Purely Symbolic?

  • LTC Low Cheng Keong (Navy) for their essay Prospects for and Impact of a Chinese Air Defence Identification Zone in the South China Seas

  • CPT Koo Kai Siong (Army) for his essay Fear Thy Neighbour? Demystifying the Object of China's Military Modernisation efforts and its Implications for Regional Security

  • CPT (Dr) Sng Jie, James (Navy) for his essay Should the SAF maintain its existing focus on Full-Spectrum Dominance or should the organisation return to its Core Deterrence and War-Fighting Mission

  • MAJ Jacques Wei-Ren Erasmus (Joint) for his essay Is Full-Spectrum Operations a viable strategic posture for the SAF? Or, will the SAF have to choose between maintaing its conventional war-fighting skill-sets ensuring interoperability with international partners, or participating in UN peace operations?

  • CPT Lau Jian Sheng (Air Force) for his essay Contested Territory: Social Media and the Battle for Hearts and Minds.

  • ME6 Khoo Koh Giok (Navy) for his essay The Viability of Non-Offensive Defence (NOD) as a Strategy for the National Security of a "Vulnerable" Singapore

  • LTA Ng Yeow Choon (Air Force) for his essay How a Good Offence is not the Best Defence: An Analysis of SAF's Approach to Cyber warfare


The winning essays were selected by a panel of six judges. This year's judges were:

  • COL Gan Siow Huang, Hd, JMPD

  • COL Lee Weng Foo, Dir, NMSC

  • DR Alan Chong, Associate Professor, RSIS


With the close of the CDF Essay Competition 2013/2014, POINTER will begin accepting entries for next year's competition, the CDF Essay Competition 2014/2015, in October/November 2014. Details and regulations will be announced at a later date.
