Dr Ng: Total Defence is Pivotal for Continued Progress

Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen was the Guest of Honour at the annual Total Defence Awards Dinner held at the Raffles City Convention Centre this evening. This year, 152 NS Advocate Awards were presented to 91 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), 22 Large Companies, 11 Individuals and 28 Organisations. The NS Advocate Award is the highest accolade conferred on businesses, organisations and individuals in recognition of their exemplary support towards Total Defence and National Service (NS).

Speaking at the dinner, Dr Ng emphasised that in light of global and regional trends such as cyberattacks, the message and goals of Total Defence are now more significant than ever. He stressed, “Singaporeans must remain watchful and alert. To respond to these ever-evolving threats, we need a collective will, a Total Defence to stand as one people united in resolve and action.” He added that Singapore may need to strengthen the existing Total Defence framework with “Digital Defence”, the details of which government agencies are working on.

Citing examples of businesses, organisations and individuals, Dr Ng thanked them for their outstanding commitment to defence. He said, “I am confident that this generation of Singaporeans will rally together when threatened. I am glad that we have stellar examples who can serve as role models across the spectrum of our society. To all the award recipients tonight, be proud that you have done your part as a role model for Singapore’s defence.”

Also present at the dinner were Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Home Affairs Mrs Josephine Teo, Senior Minister of State for Defence Mr Heng Chee How and Senior Minister of State for Education, Trade and Industry, Mr Chee Hong Tat.
