160 Commissioned as SAF Officers

Minister for Communications and Information Dr Yaacob Ibrahim reviewed a commissioning parade at the SAFTI Military Institute this evening. A total of 160 cadets, comprising 100 from the Army, 12 from the Navy and 48 from the Air Force, were commissioned as officers of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

Addressing the graduands at the parade, Dr Yaacob affirmed the importance of building strong leadership in the SAF in the face of evolving threats such as terrorism and cyberattacks. He said, "Going forward, Singapore and the SAF will need to continue to have forward-looking leaders in order to anticipate challenges and safeguard Singapore from diverse and complex threats… We entrust you to lead the SAF, to have the fortitude and resilience to deal with challenges and uncertainties, and to inspire those under your command to fight for our country and our people."

Dr Yaacob also noted the foreign cadets present at the parade, and highlighted that Singapore's interoperability and cooperation with international partners will help to counter transnational threats. He said, "The valuable friendships forged during your time here reflect the warm and long-standing defence relations and cooperation between our countries. As the world becomes more inter-connected and interdependent, these bonds help us tackle the complex threats that affect many countries".

The parade marked the completion of 38 weeks of rigorous training at the Officer Cadet School. The realistic training conducted during the course sharpened the cadets' combat, planning and leadership skills. The newly commissioned officers will go on to assume command, instructional or staff appointments in the SAF. Also present at the parade were senior Ministry of Defence officials and SAF officers, as well as families and friends of the newly commissioned officers.
