Defence Technology Prize

Every year, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) awards the Defence Technology Prize (DTP) to scientists and engineers in recognition of their contributions in strengthening Singapore's defence capabilities. Established in 1989, this award has since grown in standing and importance, and is now considered the most prestigious defence technology award given at the national level by MINDEF.

Nominations

The DTP is open to individuals and teams who have made significant technological contributions to the defence capabilities and security of Singapore. Teams may also comprise members from different organisations.

Winning the DTP 2017

A judging panel, chaired by MINDEF's Chief Defence Scientist Mr Quek Gim Pew, selected two individuals and five team award winners for DTP 2017. All individual winners will receive a trophy and a certificate. Organisations that have participated and won the Team Awards will also be presented with a trophy. Each team member will also receive a Certificate of Commendation for his or her role in the project.

DTP Individual (R&D) Award

The award is presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in pioneering defence R&D for Singapore. These individuals have also established themselves as leading authorities in a critical area of defence technology. The winner in this category for DTP 2017 is Mr Melvin Phua Yang Chien from DSO National Laboratories.

DTP Individual (Engineering) Award

The award is presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in pioneering innovative defence engineering for Singapore. These individuals have also established themselves as leading authorities in a critical area of defence technology. The winner in this category for DTP 2017 is Mr Leong See Sum from the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA).

DTP Team (R&D) Award

The award is presented to teams for their outstanding accomplishments in research and development to enhance the defence capabilities of Singapore. The two winners in this category for DTP 2017 are the (i) Advanced Information Security Team, and (ii) Advanced Information Security Analytics Team from DSO National Laboratories and the Singapore Armed Forces Joint Service.

DTP Team (Engineering) Award

The award is presented to teams for their outstanding contributions in the delivery of breakthrough engineering solutions and integrated systems to enhance the defence capabilities of Singapore. The three winners in this category for DTP 2017 are the (i) Air Surveillance System Team from DSO National Laboratories, DSTA and the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF), (ii) Realisation of Integrated Networked Force Team from DSTA, DSO National Laboratories, RSAF, the Republic of Singapore Navy, ST Aerospace and ST Electronics, and (iii) Army C4IT Team from DSTA, DSO National Laboratories, Singapore Army and ST Electronics.
