Fact Sheet: Increase in National Service Rank Allowance

With effect from 1 Apr 2012, the monthly National Service (NS) rank allowance for full-time National Servicemen (NSFs) and Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) in the Singapore Armed Forces, Singapore Police Force, and Singapore Civil Defence Force will be increased by $60 across all ranks. The increase in NS rank allowance reaffirms the key role that National Servicemen play in safeguarding the sovereignty and security of Singapore as we mark 45 years of NS this year.

The NS rank allowance was last reviewed in 2009, when it was increased by $20.  With the latest revision, a recruit will receive a monthly NS rank allowance of $480, up from the $420 that he currently receives. After factoring in combat allowances, a typical NSF enlistee who is a rifleman (LCP) in an Infantry Battalion will receive $650 per month in allowance; while a typical NSF officer holding the rank of 2LT will receive $1150 per month in allowance. Table 1 provides the comparison of the current and revised NS rank allowance for typical NSF ranks:
