Fact Sheet: LEARNet

What is LEARNet?

LEARNet is an internet-based progressive learning initiative that leverages on technology to allow our soldiers to access online training content for self-directed learning and collaborate actively to create and share knowledge from camps and their homes. LEARNet also connects learners to a knowledge repository known as the SAF Knowledge Exchange (SKX) where information is harvested, packaged and made available to all users to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Implementation

A pilot roll-out in 2009 for four training institutes enabled trainees in these units to access learning resources through portable devices at the point of need. Content is also designed to highlight key lessons quickly, making learning easier, efficient and focused. In 2011, the SAF was awarded Asia's Most Admired Knowledge Enterprise Award at the World Knowledge Forum for the LEARNet initiative. As the pilot implementation has proven to be successful, LEARNet will be progressively implemented to the SAF-wide training community where existing curriculum and lessons are reformed to incorporate technology-enabled learning and this is supported by the SKX and an internal app store.

The next phase of the LEARNet programme will see the broadening of the current library of knowledge to topics that include individual skills and proficiencies, team-based warfighting competencies and operational learning from recent and relevant operations. These enhancements will allow soldiers to further strengthen collaborative learning by enabling soldiers to pen down and share their learning with others on the SKX.
