The Republic of Singapore Air Force and Temasek Polytechnic Commence Work-Study Programme Leading to Diploma in Engineering (Aerospace)

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and Temasek Polytechnic (TP) commenced a programme for a Work-Study Certificate (WSCert) that will lead to a Diploma in Engineering (Aerospace) for Full-time National Servicemen (NSFs) serving as Air Force Technicians (AFTs). This work-study programme enables RSAF NSF AFTs to gain academic recognition while contributing to the defence of Singapore. This is the second such programme by the RSAF, in collaboration with educational partners.

The WSCert and Diploma Programme is open to NSFs with relevant Aerospace-related Institute of Technical Education (ITE) qualifications. NSF AFTs have to complete two Modular Certificates (MCs) to obtain the WSCert before completing three more MCs to attain the Diploma in Engineering (Aerospace). The full programme will be conducted over two and a half years. NSF AFTs who enrol in the programme will undergo academic modules at TP during the weekend and hands-on training with the RSAF during the weekday for academic credits that count towards the Diploma. The academic rigour of the programme provides the NSF AFTs with strong theoretical foundations to complement the on-the-job training they receive in the RSAF. This prepares them for their technically-demanding roles, and helps them get started on their careers in the aerospace industry.

Head Air Engineering and Logistics, Military Expert 8 Timothy Yap said, "The RSAF is committed to continuously enhancing the National Service experience of our NSFs. This programme with Temasek Polytechnic, the second such programme from the RSAF, will not only enhance the knowledge of our NSF Air Force Technicians in their operational roles, but also provide them with the skills that are relevant to the aerospace industry. The robust training and academic recognition this programme provides for our NSFs will put them in good stead as skilled aircraft technicians both now and in the future."

Commenting on the partnership, the Director of TP's School of Engineering, Mr Song Kwok Yuen said: "Temasek Polytechnic is happy to play a part in the academic upgrading of NSF Air Force Technicians. This programme aims to equip graduates with fundamental engineering and specialised aerospace domain knowledge. The rigorous curriculum will also widen the problem-solving and analytical skills of participants in their day-to-day work. We are confident that our team of lecturers who have strong aerospace industry background will be able to value-add to the academic and skills upgrading of participants."

This collaboration with TP underscores MINDEF's and the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) commitment to enhance the NS experience, maximise the contributions and strengthen the capabilities of our national servicemen.
