Moments in Basic Specialisation Course 1

"The art of the sailor is to leave nothing to chance." (Annie Van De Wiele, Navigator)

And we definitely don't leave our sailors' training up to chance either! After completing BMT, trainees go through the Basic Specialisation Course 1 (BSC1) at the Naval Military Expert Institute. BSC1 equips them with common naval knowledge, as well as skills specific to their vocation. The course culminates with a Summative Exercise (SUMEX) where the trainees undergo a rigorous but realistic routine to prepare them to join an operational warship! At the end of BSC1, our trainees will go down to the ships as ready sailors for the next phase of training.

Our young sailors will be graduating from BSC1 in a few days time! But before they do, here's a look back at some moments during their training.

It might not be the tastiest cheese, but it's definitely one of the prettiest!

One of the hallmarks of a good sailor is knowing how to keep the decks shipshape! Trainees learn how to cheese down ropes in a way that would make any Buffer proud.

"Hit Alpha! Hit Alpha!" Out at sea, there is no 995 to call... Everyone learns in their first days as a sailor to be responsible for fire-fighting and damage control on board.

"Command Priority: Fight!" Our engineers keep the ships fighting fit! Giving them realistic and practical training right from the start ensures we put them on the path to success.

Fighting fit ships need fighting fit sailors! Our trainees put their swimming skills to the test at the end of SUMEX with a 1km swim.
