Singapore and Brunei Reaffirm Defence Relations through 9th Defence Policy Dialogue

Permanent Secretary (Defence) Mr Chan Heng Kee and Permanent Secretary (Policy, Finance and Administration) of the Bruneian Ministry of Defence Colonel (COL) (Rtd) Norsuriati binti Haji Sharbini co-chaired the 9th Singapore-Brunei Defence Policy Dialogue (DPD) at the Singapore Ministry of Defence this morning. During the DPD, Mr Chan and COL (Rtd) Norsuriati reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to deepening the bilateral defence relationship. Both sides exchanged views on the regional and international security environment, and also welcomed further cooperation on the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM-Plus.

This marks the first in-person Singapore-Brunei DPD since the COVID-19 pandemic. Inaugurated in 2009, the DPD underscores the strength of the bilateral defence relationship and provides a platform for discussion on current and new areas of defence cooperation.

COL (Rtd) Norsuriati is in Singapore from 4 to 7 December 2022 for her introductory visit. As part of her visit, COL (Rtd) Norsuriati called on Senior Minister of State for Defence Mr Zaqy Mohamad and on Mr Chan, and visited the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies and the Republic of Singapore Air Force's 120 Squadron at Sembawang Air Base yesterday. COL (Rtd) Norsuriati will visit HQ Combat Service Support Command at Kranji Camp III later today.

COL (Rtd) Norsuriati's visit reaffirms the close and long-standing defence relations between Singapore and Brunei. Besides established dialogues such as the DPD between Ministry officials, the armed forces of both countries also interact regularly through bilateral exercises, cross-attendance of courses, professional exchanges and visits.
