Chief of Staff of the US Army Makes Introductory Visit to Singapore

Chief of Staff of the United States (US) Army General (GEN) James C. McConville called on Permanent Secretary (Defence) Mr Chan Heng Kee at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) on 8 July 2020. During their meeting, Mr Chan and GEN McConville reaffirmed the excellent and long-standing bilateral defence relationship between both countries. Both sides also noted the strategic partnership and support that Singapore has provided for US forces in the region for the past 30 years, under the ambit of the 1990 Memorandum of Understanding Regarding United States Use of Facilities in Singapore, and agreed to work closely to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

GEN McConville, who was on his introductory visit to Singapore from 8 to 9 July 2020, also called on Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Melvyn Ong and Chief of Army Major-General Goh Si Hou, after reviewing a Guard of Honour at MINDEF.

GEN McConville's visit underscores the strong ties between the Singapore Army and the US Army. Both armies interact regularly through high-level visits, a wide range of professional exchanges, and exercises such as Exercise Tiger Balm and Exercise Lightning Strike. Such interactions have enhanced professionalism, strengthened interoperability and forged close friendships between the personnel of both armies.

Relevant health checks and safety measures were taken by the visiting delegation.
