LG Melvyn Ong enlisted into the Singapore Army in January 1994 and commissioned as an Officer in October 1994. An Infantry Officer by vocation, LG Ong served his junior command tours in the Infantry and Guards formation before assuming the appointment of Commander, 7th Singapore Infantry Brigade from 2010 to 2011, during which he was appointed as the Singapore's Contingent Commander for the earthquake relief efforts in Christchurch, New Zealand. LG Ong was the Chief Guards Officer from June 2014 to Aug 2015 where he led the organisation of the SG50 Golden Jubilee National Day Celebrations as the Chairman of the Executive Committee.
As the Chief of Army, LG Ong steered the "Army Ready, Soldier Strong" efforts to strengthen the Army's operational readiness and homeland security capabilities against terrorism, maximise soldier performance and enhanced National Service (NS) training. He also implemented a number of initiatives to strengthen NS administration and experience.
LG Ong held various key staff appointments in the Ministry of Defence. He headed the Joint Plans and Transformation Department, where he was in charge of strategic planning, long-term capability development and resource management for the SAF. He also served as Head of the Personnel Development Branch in G1-Army, where he spearheaded the revamp of career schemes for specialists and warrant officers in the Army.
LG Ong attended the Indonesian Army Staff and Command School in Indonesia in 2005 and the United States Army's Infantry Officer Course in Fort Benning, Georgia in 1998.
From 2013 to 2014, LG Ong served as Deputy CEO of the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) jointly under the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) and Ministry of Education (MOE). In addition to setting up this new agency, he was instrumental in crafting policies and engaging the early childhood sector to raise the quality, accessibility and affordability of early childhood services.
For his contributions to the SAF, LG Ong was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Silver) (Military) in 2012. He was also conferred the Bintang Kartika Eka Paksi Utama (Indonesia) and the Knight Grand Cross (First Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand in 2018.
LG Ong received his education in Singapore in Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and National Junior College. In 1994, he was awarded the SAF Overseas Scholarship to pursue his undergraduate studies in the UK. LG Ong graduated with a Master of Science from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1998.
LG Melvyn Ong is married to Nicole Lynn McCully and they have three children – Gabrielle, Ryan and Euan.
