cyberpioneer is the official news website of the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). Managed by the Defence Media Centre (DMC) of MINDEF Communications Organisation, its aim is to provide up-to-date news on the SAF and defence matters related to Singapore.

Created to complement the PIONEER magazine, cyberpioneer also includes an online archive of all key feature stories published in the monthly, dating back to May 2001.


PIONEER magazine was recognised as a finalist for Best Government Publication in the 2015 Content Marketing Awards (CMA). The April 2014 and May 2014 stories on Women's Basic Military Training were also finalists in the Best Series of Articles - Print or Digital category, while the May 2014 PIONEER Cover was a finalist for Best Cover.

Open to companies and organisations worldwide, the competition includes 75 categories recognising all aspects of content marketing, from strategy and distribution to design and editorial. Other CMA winners/finalists included Autodesk, MediaCorp, SPH Magazines and Tuber Productions.

In the 2016 CMAs, PIONEER was also a finalist for Best Government Publication. Winners in this year's edition included Marriott International, Dell, IBM and SPH Magazines.

PIONEER's September 2014 photo feature story "Tough Love" on NDU trainees bagged a Bronze award in the Photography - Magazine, Campaign or Series category of the Creativity International Awards 2015.

The October 2014, February 2015 and March 2015 PIONEER covers all took home a Bronze award for Magazine Cover Design.

The Creativity International Awards is one of the longest-running, independent international advertising and graphic design competitions, and is open to both students and professionals from around the world. This edition received entries from more than 40 countries; among the winning agencies were HBO, Oculus Design and PepsiCo Design & Innovation.

The April 2014, May 2014 and October 2014 issues of PIONEER also clinched awards in the Publication Design category of the GDUSA American Graphic Design Awards 2015.

Organised by Graphic Design USA, this five-decade-old international competition honours outstanding new work of all kinds, from print and packaging to Internet and interactive design. It received more than 9,000 entries, and other winners included Coca-Cola Design Studios and Forbes Media.

PIONEER was also the winner for Overall Use of Social Media (Association/Non-Profit) in the 2015 Eddies Digital awards.

For the Ozzies, the March 2015 cover received an Honourable Mention for Cover Design in the Association/Non-Profit (B-to-B) - Single Article - 6 or more issues category.

The PIONEER Kids Supplement 2014 also received an Honourable Mention for Overall Design in the Association/Non-Profit (B-to-B) – 6 or more issues category.

For more than 20 years, the Eddie and Ozzies have recognised excellence in magazine editorial and design across all sectors of the industry. It received 2,800 entries in the 2015 edition of the awards. Other winners included Hearst Magazines Digital Media, Net-A-Porter, Time Inc, Readers' Digest and Conde Nast Publications.  

At the 2016 Hermes Creative Awards, the April 2014 issue of PIONEER bagged a Platinum award in the Magazine Publication category, while the July 2015 issue won a Gold award in the same category.

PIONEER's regular "People" section also clinched a Gold award in the People/Portrait category. The magazine's February 2014 infographic on the Black Knights' aerial manoeuvres, "Dancing in the Skies", and February 2015 infographic on the search for AirAsia flight QZ8501, "SAF assets deployed for search operations", both received an Honourable Mention in the Infographic category.

The Hermes Creative Awards is an international competition for creative professionals involved in the concept, writing and design of traditional materials and programmes, and emerging technologies. This year, there were more than 6,000 entries from over the world. Other winning entries came from companies such as Bloomberg, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, IBM, National Geographic Learning, PepsiCo and The Washington Post.

The November 2015 issue of PIONEER was selected as an APEX 2016 Grand Award Winner. The March 2015 "Snapshot" photo, "In search of AirAsia QZ8501", also won an Award of Excellence.

An annual competition for publishers, editors, writers and designers who create print, Web, electronic and social media, the APEX Awards 2016 edition attracted more than 1,600 entries.  Other winners include the Ford Motor Company, SPH Magazines and Mediacorp Pte Ltd.
