Commander OCS SAFTI Military Institute COCC
Commander OCS SAFTI Military Institute COCC

The Officer Cadet School welcomed Colonel (COL) Edwin Goh Tiong Cheng as its new Commander on 22 May 18. He took over from COL Kenny Tay Hui Hian at a Change-of-Command Ceremony witnessed by Commandant SAFTI MI, Brigadier-General (BG) Chua Boon Keat.

It was under the dedicated leadership of COL Kenny Tay that steered OCS to uphold its status as a premier training institute. He implemented the 'Soldier Strong' framework, which promulgated an enduring fitness culture and a significant development of combat readiness training in the school. Such training imbued the cadets and leaders of the school with mental resilience and toughness, yet with a tacit knowledge on soldiering.

COL Kenny Tay stood before our men and women in uniform; providing valuable lessons from time to time on trust, responsibility, duty and honour whilst conducting himself with such exemplary traits. In addition, he bolstered enduring friendships with his instructors and staff, and never failed to provide a listening ear, a smile or a sincere wave to a soldier no matter the rank or status.

We would like to thank COL Kenny Tay for his unflagging service and unwavering commitment to OCS. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours and also welcome COL Edwin Goh to the OCS family!

President Halimah Visits SAF Officer Cadets Training in Brunei
President Halimah Visits SAF Officer Cadets Training in Brunei

TEMBURONG - President Halimah Yacob on Sunday (May 13) visited Singapore Armed Forces officer cadets undergoing jungle and survival training here, where she noted that such overseas training helps build their skills and confidence.

She is in Brunei on a four-day state visit, her first, and had travelled from the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan to Temburong, which is Brunei's easternmost district, where she met soldiers from the Officer Cadet School.

There, she also observed officer cadets completing a combat swim, and was shown how soldiers are trained to identify and forage for edible food in the jungle, as well as scavenge for materials to build a shelter during rainy conditions.

"I am glad to see how overseas training, such as this in Brunei, builds the confidence and competence of our soldiers by exposing them to different stressors than that experienced in Singapore," said Madam Halimah, who also emphasised the importance of training leaders who care for their soldiers and lead with purpose.

Madam Halimah was accompanied by Chief of Army Goh Si Hou, Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat, and Senior Minister of State for Defence Mohamad Maliki Osman. Her husband, Mr Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee, and Members of Parliament Joan Pereira and Lim Wee Kiak were also present.

Singapore and Brunei have shared close defence ties since 1976. The SAF conducts regular training in Brunei, and there are frequent bilateral exercises and visits.
