109/17 Common Leadership Module
109/17 COMMON LEADERSHIP MODULE

In the early hours of 30th September 2017, Officer Cadets of the 109/17 Officer Cadet Course were put through the traditional OCS Initiation. Junior Officer Cadets were turned out by their seniors as part of the initiation ceremony to test their mettle and operational readiness. With unwavering spirit, the Junior Officer Cadets proved themselves worthy of being initiated into Officer Cadet School as they donned the 2-bar epaulette.

The Officer Cadets then introduced their families and friends to SAFTI MI’s grounds, where they will live, learn and train in the months ahead. Guests were also given an opportunity to interact with the Commanders and Instructors of the School. It was only 14 days ago, on the 18th of September, when they were one of the 467 recruits that entered the premises of SAFTI MI for the first time. It was the start of their journey to Officership as Officer Cadets, as they faced a series of vigorous challenges.

The Common Leadership Module is the first phase of the road to Officership that every SAF Officer Cadet will embark on. The 2 week program refines the resolve of the Officer Cadets and prepare them for the toilsome journey ahead. The 109/17 OCC CS Smoke Confidence Exercise was the first challenge for every Officer Cadet, where Officer Cadets will put their chemical defence training to the test as they were subjected to tear gas. Within the Smoke Training Facility, Instructors supervised the Officer Cadets as they executed basic exercises and a change of canister drill in their Individual Protective Equipment (IPE) Suits. Under pressure in an unfamiliar situation, this exercise sought to imbue the Officer Cadets with confidence in their equipment and to test their drill competencies.

Following that was the Confidence Jump and SAFTI Tower Run. The activity involved jumping off a 5-metre high platform into the SAFTI MI swimming pool, after which the Cadets scaled 265 steps to the top of the SAFTI Tower, each signifying a day that they will spend within the course. Designed to push them beyond their comfort zones, the Confidence Jump and SAFTI Tower Run are important milestones marking the beginning of a cadet’s journey to commissioning. After an arduous 2 weeks, we would like to congratulate the 109/17 Officer Cadets on completing their Common Leadership Term and taking their first step towards becoming Officers of the SAF.

108/17 SENIOR BAR PRESENTATION

In the morning of 20 September 2017, to mark the end of Army Service Term, the Officer Cadets of the 108/17 Officer Cadet Course embarked on an important milestone that tested their limits, both individually and as a fighting entity.

Instead of the traditional 24km Route March with basic load, the Officer Cadets marched 24km with their combat load and negotiated through the SEOC.

Ending their march at the SAFTI MI Parade Square, the Officer Cadets were presented their 3-bar epaulettes, symbols of their progression to Professional Term. As they continue to push and surpass their personal limits, we congratulate them as they proceed on their journey of leadership to become Officers of the SAF.

"Mission Success, Safety Always" is the tagline set by the Army Safety Inspectorate (ASI) for the Army. As the new work year begins in April, members of the Army conducted a review on how the safety goals for the previous work year were met. OCS conducts its own safety day monthly on the first Monday. However, to align with the Army level review, OCS conducted its Safety day on 13 April, supervised by Chief Instructor LTC Chod Kai Kiong.

"If we as Officers do not take charge of our own safety then how are we able to instill the same safety discipline to our men?" OCS aims to not only meet but surpass the safety goals for the upcoming work year, ensuring Officer Cadets are groomed in a tough yet safe environment.
