NS55 – Defending our Key Installations

55 years have passed since the introduction of National Service, as generations of National Servicemen made the sacrifices needed to keep our country and our families safe. Singapore has also transformed into an important global financial and trading hub, with many key installations that drive our economy. To protect these important infrastructures, our servicemen have worked tirelessly and round the clock to ensure that Singapore is well protected from any potential threats. This week, we spoke to the soldiers who are performing daily operations at key installations such as Singapore Changi Airport and Jurong Island, to gain insight into their day-to-day operations and their thoughts on playing a key role in safeguarding these assets.

Our Security Troopers regularly patrol Changi Airport to deter and react against any possible threats. Third Sergeant (3SG) Kho Hong Wei, Joel, is a section commander from 8 SIR involved in the Protection of Key Installation operations at Changi Airport. He and his team are tasked to patrol the airport together with the Singapore Police Force, in order to help ensure the safety and security of the airport.

How do you feel about being on duty even on public holidays?

I was deployed on National Day, and I felt that it was necessary to do so as someone had to be on duty. In addition, I could also let those who were previously on duty to rest on National Day so that they could watch the show with their family and friends too.

Corporal (CPL) Mohamed Nur Hakim Bin Yaakop, a Security Trooper from 8 SIR, shared more about the importance of their job and the memorable moments he has had while deployed for operations.

Were there any memorable moments during your deployment?

Memorable moments include seeing kids become excited when they see us. I think it is because it is very rare for them to see Army soldiers patrolling in public. As a result, when they see a soldier like us, they will be very excited.

What do you think of the role that you play in this Protection of Key Installation operation?

I think it is important for the SAF to carry out such operations to defend our key installations. Singapore Changi Airport is one of our key installations and the airport is like the face of Singapore. When tourists come to Singapore, the first place they will see is the airport. Our presence helps to deter any possible threats and to give a sense of assurance to tourists that the airport, and by extension, Singapore, is safe.

Over on the other side of the island, our Security Troopers are also protecting another key installation of the country and the heart of Singapore's chemical and energy industry, Jurong Island. Corporal First Class (CFC) Gabriel Lo Jia Le, Security Trooper from 9 SIR, shared about the main purpose of their deployment there and how he felt about taking up this important task.

What is your role here being deployed at Jurong Island?

The main purpose of being deployed here is to prevent intruders from coming in and disrupting the operations in Jurong Island, which is a huge part of Singapore's economy. Thus, it is a very important place to defend, and if not done right, it could lead to serious consequences.

How does taking on this task as part of your National Service feel?

I am extremely honoured and proud to be able to serve in this aspect. I was not expecting myself to be able to play such an important role in defending Singapore’s interest. I am proud to be able to serve as a National Serviceman, and be given the opportunity to be part of Singapore’s defence.

Having regular duties can also be tough and mentally draining for our Security Troopers, who often have to participate in night duties. CFC Ravi Diliban shares how his family has provided him with emotional support for him to carry out his duties.

“When I go home, my mom and dad always ask about the things that I go through every day. After that, they would always support me and help me overcome my problems.”

Lastly, Lance Corporal (LCP) Asnawi Bin Mahammad expressed his gratitude to his fellow buddies and commanders who have been by his side and supported him throughout this journey of defending Jurong Island.

“To my platoon mates, thank you for making this one and a half years of deployment fun. The presence of you guys helped liven up the otherwise monotony of routine duties. And to my commanders, thank you for ensuring a smooth sailing deployment and for supporting us all the way.”

As we celebrate NS55, we would like to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to all National Servicemen for dutifully doing your part to ensure that Singaporeans can live in a safe and secure country. Lastly, to NSFs who are currently serving the nation – keep up the good work of the previous batches of NSFs and continue to do your best in defending Singapore!
