
Transitioning from civilian life to being a soldier has always been daunting. Having a buddy around to support each other through this process helps one to tide through challenges, forming strong bonds in the process.
From strangers to close buddies: PTE Gavin Lim (left) and PTE Tan Ming Wei (right)
A pair of buddies who trained together at Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC) at Pulau Tekong is PTE Gavin Lim and PTE Tan Ming Wei. Having been through numerous training, both in-camp and outfield, the two eventually formed a strong bond, labelling their friendship as a form of "brotherhood".
PTE Tan shared how the strong bonds formed during BMTC has changed him. "Since enlisting, the bonds formed with my buddy has allowed me to understand the concept of 'camaraderie'. I remember during the first two days of field camp, it was tough on us mentally and physically, but through mutual encouragement, we were able to pull through till the end."

Sharing the same sentiments, PTE Lim shared how thankful he was to his buddy for having been with him through his BMT journey. "Ming Wei constantly encourages me, and has influenced me to lead better and always be the best I can offer. We have gone from two strangers to close buddies, and I'm proud of how we managed to push through all obstacles to finally completing our BMT together."

Harbouring the same dream of serving the nation, PTE Miranda Chan and PTE Phoebe Puah shared priceless memories and experiences during their BMT, quickly forming a closely-knitted friendship. "My buddy, Phoebe, is definitely a huge pillar of mental, emotional and physical support for me during BMT. I remember feeling all demoralised during our live firing because I didn’t perform as well. She encouraged me and reminded that I can excel in many ways as long as I don't give up. She has definitely helped me grow and develop to become an even better version of myself."
For PTE Puah, one memorable moment was during their field camp. "I remember it began pouring. We had to hide in the shelter which we built to avoid the rain. At that time, it was a comfort and relief to have my buddy with me while we did our best to complete our field camp under all conditions."

Being each other's pillar of support, the pair of buddies, PTE Aung Khant Moe and PTE Kittiratanasakul Mongkol, depended on each other during the BMT journey. "Field camp was tough mentally and physically, and I was on the verge of giving up, but Khant Moe continuously encouraged me, telling me that we will get through the field camp together. I was able to persevere on, thanks to his encouragement and I am very thankful for that."
Mutually motivating each other, PTE Aung shared how his buddy has helped him through tough training, even till the end of his BMT journey. "During the 24km route march, I was already mentally drained and zoned out. But Kittiratanasakul kept making small talks to keep me engaged and that helped me to successfully complete the route march."

Having graduated from BMTC together, PTE Mongkol is thankful for the help and encouragement that PTE Aung has given to him. "I would like to thank Khant Moe for the help he has given me through the tough training. From strangers to buddies to now, brothers – here's to everlasting brotherhood! I wish you all the best in your next phase of National Service!"
