A Story of Resilience and Resolve – LCP Kwok Chin Teck

Overcoming difficulties has always been a tall order for anyone to fulfill. Yet, how one pushes through during times of trouble and persevere till the end is what truly defines a person.

This is the story of LCP Kwok Chin Teck, a Manpower Ops Admin Support Assistant (ASA) from 3rd Battalion Singapore Guards (3 Gds). Influenced by his father who used to serve as a Guardsman, LCP Kwok continued to strive for excellence despite suffering an injury during Basic Military Training (BMT).

After enlisting, LCP Kwok was determined from the get-go, coming in with the mindset to make the most out of his two years in National Service (NS), aiming to become an Officer. However, he was denied his opportunity due to a bout of pneumonia and lower back injury. These unexpected health issues dampened LCP Kwok's enthusiasm, leaving him dejected as he felt that all his effort and hard work have been reduced to nothing.

However, he quickly picked himself up and was subsequently posted to 3 Gds as an ASA. "Instead of wasting time dwelling in sadness and negativity, I made a promise to myself to make every single day of my time in the Army meaningful and worthwhile."

With his commitment and determination to give his best, LCP Kwok was noticed by his superiors for his good performance, eventually receiving two Commanding Officer (CO) coins as well as a letter of appreciation to recognise his hard work. "I never thought that I would be receiving anything remotely near a CO coin, much less two of them. I am thankful that my hard work has paid off and though I didn't achieve my initial goal of being a commissioned Officer, what I've achieved in the end is still something I am proud of."

Looking back, LCP Kwok shared how great an influence his father was to him. "My father served in the Guards formation and as he shared his stories as a Guardsman with me, I was intrigued by what he went through. Training was tough and grueling but he told me no matter how difficult the journey is, nothing should ever crush a person's strong will and determination to push on. Whenever I face obstacles in my journey, I will always recall my father's words, giving me the strength to carry on."

Having completed his two years of service, LCP Kwok wishes the best to his Guards family. "I wish the best for everyone. Just remember, no matter what your appointment or vocation is, your work will always contribute to the mission of being 'Always Ready!' Thank you fellow Guardsmen for a fulfilling NS journey!"
