UNIKOM (UN Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission)
Since 1991, MINDEF has been sending officers to participate in UNIKOM, Kuwait, as military observers. From Oct '93 to Oct '94, a senior SAF officer held the appointment of Chief of Staff and Deputy Force Commander of UNIKOM while another officer held the post of Deputy Chief Operations Officer in UNIKOM from Jul 96 to Jul 97. From Jul 98 and Jul 99, LTC Seah Koon Tay held the post of South Sector Commander.

Background Information: Britain oversaw foreign relations and defense for the ruling Kuwaiti AL-SABAH dynasty from 1899 until independence in 1961. Kuwait was attacked and overrun by Iraq on 2 August 1990. Following several weeks of aerial bombardment, a US-led UN coalition began a ground assault on 23 February 1991 that completely liberated Kuwait in four days. Kuwait spent more than $5 billion to repair oil infrastructure damaged during 1990-91.
