The event organiser, MAJ Roy de Souza said, "All of us miss our friends and families back home and to many, National Day is a time when friends and families sit together to reflect how far Singapore has come from her days of being a mere fishing village to the country we hold true to our hearts today"

The first batch consisted of five wide-eyed soldiers eager for the opportunities that the SAFOS offered, and among them, a certain Lee Hsien Loong, now the Prime Minister of Singapore.

Army Interaction Games http://www.mindef.gov.sg/imindef/mindef_websites/atozlistings/army/army_news/News_Archive/2008/Aug2008/aig08.html The strong bonds of friendship between our Army and Tentara Nasional Indonesia - Angkatan Darat (TNI-AD) were reinforced at the annual Army Interaction Games (AIG) held from 24 to 25 July. Into its third year, the initiative has already contributed significantly in strengthening personal ties and enhancing mutual understanding between the senior commanders of both armies. In a friendly shooting competition at Nee Soon Range, soldiers from both armies fired our locally developed SAR 21 assault rifle. Other activities included a golf game and an official dinner which further allowed the commanders to forge and renew friendships.

Recognising Companies' Contributions to Total Defence http://www.mindef.gov.sg/imindef/mindef_websites/atozlistings/army/army_news/News_Archive/2008/Aug2008/total_defence.html In a ceremony on 30 July at the Pan Pacific Hotel, 244 companies were recognised for their exemplary contributions to Total Defence. Many of them had either shown strong support for their NSmen employees to attend In-Camp Training, or given outstanding cooperation in resource requisitioning exercises. Minister for Defence, Mr Teo Chee Hean gave out 10 prestigious Minister for Defence Awards, while Minister of State for Defence, Associate Professor Koo Tsai Kee presented 72 Distinguished Defence Partner Awards and 162 Meritorious Defence Partner Awards.
