The Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy, Admiral Sumardjono, was conferred the Meritorious Service Medal (Military) by Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean this morning.

The Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy, Admiral Sumardjono, was conferred Singapore's prestigious award, the Pingat Jasa Gemilang (Tentera) or Meritorious Service Medal (Military), by Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean at an investiture ceremony at the Ministry of Defence this morning. ADM Sumardjono was awarded the medal in recognition of his significant role in strengthening the excellent ties and friendship between the Indonesian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy.

Under Admiral Sumardjono's leadership, the relationship between the Indonesian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy has grown in scope and depth. Besides having regular professional exchange programmes and interactions, the two navies participate in a wide range of bilateral naval exercises including Exercise Eagle. Admiral Sumardjono has also continued to support efforts to enhance regional maritime security through the Malacca Strait Patrols, the Indonesia-Singapore Coordinated Patrols and the bilateral sea surveillance system codenamed Project SURPIC. These interactions have enhanced mutual understanding and camaraderie between the officers and men of the two navies.

Before receiving his award, Admiral Sumardjono called on Minister Teo and Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Chew Men Leong.
