Naval Diving Unit (NDU) is responsible for all diving operations of the RSN, which include general diving, explosive ordnance disposal and mine disposal for the SAF. It comprises the Dive School, the Clearance Diving Group, the Underwater Demolition Group, and the Special Warfare Group.
Based at Sembawang Camp, NDU's facilities include a 10-metre deep diving pool with an underwater viewing gallery to allow instructors to observe divers during underwater training, a multi-purpose Confidence Tower, a 25-metre indoor shooting range and a well-equipped Hyperbaric Medical Facility that supports the specialised needs of the divers.
The unit started as the SAF Diving Centre in 1971 before it was officially renamed the Naval Diving Unit in 1975. From its initial years, where divers were trained in the Mine Clearance Course in the United Kingdom, NDU now conducts its own diving courses, while attending various prestigious diving courses overseas. Through these courses, professional exchanges and other realistic training, including those with foreign partners, the NDU's capabilities have developed through the years enabling it to make a strong contribution towards the defence of Singapore.
