Twenty-two National Service (NS) Officers from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) graduated from the 7th NS Command and Staff Course at a ceremony held at the Istana this evening. They join a core group of Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) who have taken up higher responsibilities in the SAF. Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen presented the officers with certificates and awards at the graduation ceremony.
The NS Command and Staff Course is conducted annually by the Singapore Command and Staff College (SCSC) to groom NS officers who demonstrate potential for higher command and staff appointments. Besides modules on leadership and operational military knowledge in the 3rd Generation SAF, this year's course included modules on Security Studies designed to give senior commanders an appreciation of the security implications of globalisation and the role the SAF plays in safeguarding our national interests. The officers underwent a seven-month correspondence course before attending a five-and-a-half week residential phase at SAFTI Military Institute. They will be appointed as Battalion Commanders and Brigade Principal Staff Officers (PSOs) in SAF units.
MAJ (NS) Harbans Singh won this year's Top Graduate award and the Distinguished Graduates were MAJ (NS) Ong Hian Chong, CPT (NS) Tan Boon Khai and CPT (NS)(DR) Lim Jui.
