Synopsis: The final phase of Exercise Deep Sabre took place at Pasir Panjang Scanning Station today.
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) scanned the container suspected of carrying an illegal shipment of dual-use chemicals using a Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System (VACIS). This mobile, non-intrusive scanner enables ICA officers to “see” the contents of the container.
After the container had been unloaded, a team from the SAF Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Explosives (CBRE) Defence Group moved in to screen the container for chemical, radiological and explosive threats.
Customs officers co-ordinated the ground operations for the unloading of the container’s content. Another SAF CBRE team extracted samples of the suspected chemical for analysis by an accredited laboratory.
Contingency response forces from the SCDF were also on standby with decontamination facilities, ambulances and fire truck.
Pending the result of the laboratory analysis, the container, with its contents is detained by Singapore Customs and transported to a secure location.
The port search showed the close co-ordination and co-operation among various agencies.
