Total Defence Awards

A strong and credible defence force is the cornerstone of Singapore’s continued independence and economic growth. National Servicemen (NSmen) form the bulk of our defence and security forces to guarantee our sovereignty and to preserve our way of life. While they perform these sacred duties, they also have to balance the demands of work and the responsibilities at home. Having strong support from their employer, family and community provides the peace of mind for NSmen to give their best when they serve their NS commitments.

Since 1986, the Total Defence Awards (TDA) has been a platform for MINDEF/SAF to recognise employers’ support towards Total Defence. We welcome supportive employers like you to partner us in supporting our NSmen in fulfilling their annual duties and training. Last year, the Committee to Strengthen National Service (CSNS) chaired by the Minister for Defence further examined how the NS system can be strengthened, to better serve Singapore and Singaporeans. In June this year, the committee proposed a list of 30 recommendations to engender greater public support for NS. The list has since been accepted by the government.

As part of the CSNS’s recommendation, the Advisory Council for Community Relations in Defence (ACCORD) has been restructured to comprise 3 sub-councils to engender greater support from key stakeholders like employers, educational institutions, family and the community. For more information on ACCORD, please click here.

One of the ACCORD initiatives was to revamp the TDA to recognise NS advocates from our key stakeholder groups. The revamped TDA comprise the following categories:

  • Friends of NS (For Individuals)
  • Advocate of NS (Corporate)
  • Advocate of NS (Organisation)

These awards will be presented at the Total Defence Awards Gala Dinner annually.
