General Matters

How often do I sail?
You may expect yourself to sail for regular exercises lasting between a day to several days at a stretch. On an average, you will be required to sail on the first few years of your career. Subsequently, you will be rotated to work at shore units to help you gain experience and learn about different professional "trade".

Do I have social life?
Definitely Yes! Most of the sailing are pre-scheduled at least one to three months ahead.

Do I go home every night?
Yes, provided you are not attending any courses (e.g. Basic Military Training), doing night duties or sailing.

Must I be a good swimmer to apply?
No, you need not. However, you must be willing to learn as we will provide you with training.

What are my working hours?
Depending on the unit that you will be deployed to, your appointment and the nature of the job, your working hours will vary. Most of the time, it will be regular hours (e.g. 8.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.).

What is the minimum length of time that I must serve under SAVER/Premium Plan?
As a male citizen, you need to fulfill your NSF liability or minimum term of engagement (MTE) under SAVER/Premium Plan. The MTE is computed on a 1:2.5 ratio to NS liability. Hence for a 2 years full-time NSF, the MTE will be 5 years.

What are the possible reasons for dropping out of course?
There are many reasons, but it's usually due to training injuries and medical reasons e.g. hypertension.

What are the courses available to upgrade myself?
There is wide spectrum of courses in the SAF for upgrading. These are broadly classified under Professional, Confidence and Personal Developmental courses.

The professional courses would encompass the Route-of-Advancement courses, i.e. courses that will provide you with the relevant training and knowledge for you to assume an appointment.

For Confidence Courses, these would include Basic Airborne Course and Under Water Diving Course. For Personal Developmental Courses, they would include courses like Effective Team management, Supervisory management etc. All personnel in the RSN can choose to attend these courses if their schedule permit and supported by their immediate superior.

Naval Officer

I am currently a final year JC student. Can I join the Navy as Naval Officer after the completion of 'A' level studies?
There is no Direct Entry to become an Officer in the SAF / Navy. You will be assessed during your Basic Military Training i.e. you have to meet both academic and military criteria in order to become an Officer in the Navy.

How does the Naval Officer's training differ with that of the Army?
If you have qualified for Officer's Cadet Course at OCS, you will be required to attend a 4 weeks Tri-Service Term. Thereafter followed by Midshipman course conducted at Navy Wing in OCS which comprises a 15 weeks of Basic Naval Term, 7-8 weeks of Midshipman Sea Training term, 14 weeks of Advanced Naval Term and followed by the 1 week Post Commissioning Term.

What shall I do if I intend to give up while on course at OCS?
There are consequences for not completing the course, especially if it is not due to training or medical constraints. You may be expected to repay the earned pay but this will be dealt on a case by case basis.

When can I terminate my SAVER service scheme before its completion?
For those who are serving their NSF liability, you will need to complete your liability before we can accede to the request for early release and the approval is subject to exigencies of service. You are further required to give at least 3 months advance notice to facilitate the process.

For those who already completed their NSF liability (i.e. ORDed), you will need to serve a minimum of 4 years before we can accede to the request for early release and the approval is subjected to exigencies of service. You are further required to give at least 3 months advance notice to facilitate the process.

Naval Systems Specialist

How does the initial training of an NSS differ with that of it's Army or Air Force counterparts?
Both male Army and Air Force trainees usually attend BMT at Pulau Tekong. NSSs, on the other hand, attend a 10 - week BMT at Changi Naval Training Base.

How long is the service?
The service duration is 10 years (called Premium Plan Stage 1) and it includes about 2 years of professional training and your full-time National Service liability (for males). However, you may apply for release after completing the minimum term of engagement of 5 years, for males and 3 to 4 years for females.

Female Applicants

What are the appointments female can apply for?
Female Singapore Citizen may join the Navy as Female Naval Officer, Female Naval Technical Officer, Female Naval Engineering Officer, Naval Systems Specialists, Naval Combat Systems Specialists or Naval Underwater Combat Medic.

Am I supposed to attend the Basic Military Training, just like what the guys do?
Yes, all uniformed female enlistees will be required to undergo Basic Military Training conducted at SAFTI Military Institute.

How is it like to work onboard a ship?
Due to the limited space onboard our ships, you are expected to train, work, live and sail with all your colleagues. Thus, the Navy's culture is very much of a family, and we emphasise much on teamwork.

What about career advancement in the Navy?
As far as career advancement is concerned, you will be assessed together with the male counterparts. No special preference will be given to the male counterparts.

What is the policy on getting pregnant while in service?
If you are a shipboard appointment holder, for safety reason, once you conceived, you will be posted ashore to assume Staff Appointment at the Navy Headquarters or Squadron Headquarters in Personnel Administration, Intelligence, Operations, Planning or Training.

You need to have at least 4 years of reckonable service before we can accede to the request for early release and the approval is subject to exigencies of service. You are further required to give at least 3 months advance notice to facilitate the process.

What level of physical fitness should I possess?
A pass in the NAPFA will suffice, as the basic military training will further enhance your physical fitness.

Scholarships & Awards

What are the courses that I can study in the local universities under the Local Study Award (LSA) or the SAF Academic Scholarship (SAS)?
You can take up any recognised courses such as Arts & Social Science, Business Administration, Business Studies, Science, Biochemistry, Communication Studies and Engineering courses, except Architecture and Law. Medicine will be offered if you are successful in applying for LSA for Medicine.

Is there a bond?
There will be a bond if you are given a scholarship or study award. Upon completion of your course of study, you will serve a bond of 4 to 6 years, depending on the type of scholarship or study award given. The bond period will include your NS liability.

When can I disrupt for studies under the Local Study Award (LSA) or SAF Academic Scholarship (SAS)?
You will disrupt for studies after you have commissioned as an officer.

Can I choose to study overseas?
Depending on the type of scholarship or study award given, you can opt to study in recognised overseas universities.

Under Joint Polytechnic-SAF Diploma Sponsorship Scheme (JPSDS), will I be recalled for vacation attachment during my semester holiday?
No. You will not be required to serve during your school vacations.

Under SAF-ITE Sponsorship Scheme (SISS), will I get CPF contribution for my allowance during my studies?
No, as you are getting a fixed monthly allowance instead of salary, you are not entitled to CPF contribution.
