The Sjoormen class submarines were originally purchased from Sweden for the RSN. Its excellent hydrodynamic properties is achieved by its tear drop shape. This minimises hull resistance when the submarine is submerged. These submarines now form the Challenger-class submarine squadron of the RSN.

As an opportunity for a cost-effective purchase was presented by the Royal Swedish Navy (RSwN), the RSN acquired two Vastergotland-class submarines to replace some of the Challenger-class submarines. They are expected to enter service from 2010. These newly acquired submarines will be upgraded and converted for operations in tropical waters before being delivered to the RSN. The RSN has had excellent ties with the RSwN in submarine operations and training. In purchasing the Vastergotland-class submarines, the RSN will benefit from the synergies in crew training and logistics support.
