The SAF Merit Scholarship (SMS) recipients can pursue his/her degree at a renowned overseas universities where they will be trained to meet the challenges of the new security environment, to become leaders and use their expertise to contribute back to the organisation. Likewise, the Defence Merit Scholarship (DMS) is a prestigious civilian scholarship which allows the recipients to study in some of the world's most eminent universities. Upon graduation, they will then enjoy a rewarding and challenging career as a Defence Executive Officer (DXO) within the Ministry.

On 11 August, 9 servicemen received the SMS, among which 4 of them are from Army, at Temasek Club during the Scholarship Award Presentation Ceremony hosted by Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen. At the same time, he also presented the DMS to other 5 recipients present.

Among the 4 Army recipients, 40th Battalion Singapore Armoured Regiment Platoon Commander, 2LT Cephas Ong who will be studying Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London exclaimed in excitement when he received the SMS. "This is a rare opportunity that allows me to broaden perspective and train something like independence which school does not teach which will aid him when he assume senior officer position in the organisation."
