Five Members of Parliament (MPs) had a good workout during their visit to the Army Fitness Centre (AFC) at Khatib Camp, on 30 April. They included Ms Indranee Rajah, MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC and chairperson of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Foreign Affairs, invited MPs Mr Teo Ser Luck, Dr Lim Wee Kiak, Mr Christopher De Souza and Ms Jessica Tan with Minister of State for Defence, Associate Professor Koo Tsai Kee as the host. The MPs were given an insight into the improved Individual Physical Proficiency Test, and the challenges that our NSmen face in achieving personal fitness amidst their work commitments.

During the visit, the MPs viewed our Electronic IPPT Test Scoring System, and even had a chance to try out the various stations. Mr De Souza was impressed with the this system, saying, "The automated system leaves no room for error, and there can be no dispute whether you've done a pull-up or sit-up properly. It's also a lot quicker and you don't need a Physical Training Instructor to count your pull-ups." As a working adult himself, he understands how the new system helps NSmen to save time, adding, "I came here straight from work. I got processed in five minutes and finished the stations very very quickly. I can even change out and go for a meeting tonight!"

Ms Rajah, who has not experienced National Service and IPPT, felt that the visit helped her to better understand combat fitness and operational readiness. She said, "The importance of fitness in our daily life can't be underestimated. For the SAF, it's crucially important because you guys have to be operationally ready and mission fit. But it's not just for the SAF, it's for every Singaporean - it really makes a big difference to an individual's quality of life."

She also praised the AFC's work in helping NSmen to achieve fitness, "A scientific method is part of our AFC's effort to improve NSmen training. They gave me comprehensive instructions - like for chin-ups, I had to work on the laterals, biceps, back muscles, stomach muscles. It wasn't easy, because I have a full workload, and in between work, I normally wouldn't be out on the track jogging, or doing sit-ups. I had to make a concerted effort, and realised the amount of discipline it takes. I have a great deal of admiration for those who manage to do well in IPPT."
