Medals are awarded for good conduct or exemplary service. An awardee must have demonstrated exceptional performance in the execution of his or her duty.

The SAF Good Service Medal
For Regulars -5 years of full time service served as Regular and NSF.
For NSmen -2 years of full time service served as NSF and 3 HK ICT served as NSmen. (Using 1 HK ICT as equivalent to 1 year of active service)
* NSF who did not fulfill 2 years of full time service due to the waiver given for passing NAPFA, they would be deemed to have fulfilled 2 years of full-time NSF.

For Regulars -10 years of full time service served as Regular and NSF. -NSmen are not eligible -Completion of an additional 5 years of full time service as a Regular to qualify for the 15-Year Clasp.

For Regulars -20 years of full time service served as Regular and NSF -Completion of an additional 10 years of service served as a Regular to qualify for the 30-Year Clasp.
For NSmen -20 years of service served as NSF and ORNS with NSmen/ ROVERs and VOL completing at least 90% of the required years in ORNS as ICT [(11 HK ICTs & 5 LK ICTs for 20 years medal); and (16 HK ICTs and 9 LK ICTs for 30 years clasp)].
For NSmen who are Ex-Regulars -20 years of service served as NSF, Regular and NSmen/ ROVERs and VOL. -In addition, NSmen must fulfil the no. of ICTs required and for computation purposes, each full year served as NSF or Regular will be considered as 1 HK ICTs and counted towards the required 11 HK ICTs and 5 LK ICTs. Eg: A serviceman has served a total of 20 years as at 1 Jan 2006 as follows: 2 years as NSF,10 years as Regular and 8 years of ORNS (completed 5 HK and 3 LK ICTs).
(12 yrs of full time service (which is equivalent to 12 HK) + 5 HK + 3 LK during ORNS)
He is eligible to be nominated for the 20 yrs medal as he meets the criteria of serving 20 years of service and meeting the minimum required ICTs by having completed a total of "20 ICTs equivalent" (inclusive of 17 HK ICTs equivalent). Note: This is in line with the principle used for SAF NS Medal where at least 2/3 of the required 90% of ICTs to be completed must be High Key (HK).

For Regulars -25 years of full time service served as Regular and NSF. -For ex-regulars becoming NSmen, to consider only HK ICTs in ORNS as qualifying service towards 25 Years. (Using 1 HK as equivalent to 1 year of Service)
For NSmen -25 years of service served as NSF, NSmen/ ROVERs/ VOL completing at least 90% of the required qualifying service as ICT (14 HK ICTs & 7 LK ICTs for 23 years). NSF of 2 years will be considered as qualifying service.
* This is in line with the principle used for SAF NS Medal where at least 2/3 of the required 90% of ICTs to be completed must be High Key (HK).
For NSmen who are Ex-Regulars -25 years of service served as NSF, Regular and NSmen/ ROVERs/VOL. -In addition, the NSman must fulfil the ICTs (14 HKs & 7LK ICTs) required and for computation purposes, each full year served as NSF or Regulars will be considered as 1HK ICT and counted towards the required 14 HK ICTs and 7 LK ICTs. Eg: A serviceman has served a total of 25 years as at 1 Jan 2006 as follows: 2 years as NSF, 10 years as Regular and 13 years of ORNS (completed 8 HK and 5 LK ICTs).

He is eligible to be nominated for the LSM(Military) as he meets the criteria of serving 25 years of service and meeting the minimum required ICTs by having completed a total of "25 ICTs equivalent" (inclusive of 20 HK ICTs equivalent).

SAF Overseas Service Medal
Awarded to any person whilst being a member of the SAF was engaged in service in an area outside Singapore which satisifies one or more of the following conditions:
a. Service of 96 hours or more in operations;
b. Service of 30 days or more, in the aggregate, in a period of 12 months when employed in support of any formation, unit or sub-unit of any force engaged in operations;
c. Service of 14 days or more when engaged in operations involving the keeping of peace, restoring of law and order, provision of humanitarian aid or rescue, or relief operations in support of any foreign government. Service rendered by a member of the SAF whilst undergoing a training course shall not qualify as service for the award of the medal unless the member has provided any assistance or service in any operation referred to above or service beyond the requirement of the training course.

SAF Overseas Service Medal (With Bronze Star)
A BRONZE STAR shall be awarded if such service involves hostile action or considerable personal risk. If a person to whom the medal has been previously awarded further qualifies for the award of the medal, he shall be presented a BAR to be attached to the ribbon by which the medal is suspended and also to his medal ribbon.
Notwithstanding the above, a member of the SAF who was engaged in any service referred above, who fall short of the qualifying period on account of his death or evacuation owing to an injury or other disability, shall qualify for the award of the medal if the death, injury or disability was attributable to such service.
