Qn: I would like to know if there are any chances of me serving my National Service in the Air Force.

Ans: The Air Force comprises of mainly regulars. Every year, only a handful of NSFs are assigned to serve in the Air Force, so I am afraid the chance is slim.

Qn: Is it possible for me to join the RSAF if I'm not a Singaporean?

Ans: No, it is not possible to join the Air Force because only Singapore citizens can qualify to be recruited.

Qn: Can one with a PES BP status sign up with the Air Force?

Ans: No. You need to be combat fit, PES A or B. you are advised to apply when you have been upgraded medically.

Qn: How do I subscribe to a copy of the RSAF magazine?

Ans: The RSAF magazine you mentioned is titled the "Air Force News". As it is an internal publication, it is not available for public subscription. However you can pick up a copy of the Air Force News from the SAF Careers Centre, 3 Depot Road, Singapore 109681.

Qn: What are the operating hours of the Air Force Recruitment Centre?

Ans: The operating hours are from 8.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. during weekdays and 8.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. on Saturday. We are closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Qn: If I am suspended from pilot training and is phased out, will I be required to serve my National Service as an NSman with my initial unit or somewhere else?

Ans: You are likely to be posted back to the Army or Navy unit prior to your pilot training. NSF officers who are commissioned as officers while serving in the RSAF may continue to serve their NS in the Air Force.

Qn: Is it possible to attend pilot training immediately after BMT or must I complete my fulltime NS first?

Ans:
Yes, you may be channelled for pilot training immediately after BMT if you are found suitable.

Qn: Will the requirement to take supplementary paper(s) during my Polytechnic education affect my application as a pilot?

Ans: Taking supplementary paper(s) will not affect your application as a pilot. However, a full diploma is required to qualify for pilot selection.

Qn: What happens after I have submitted my application form?

Ans: Your application will be screened and if you meet the basic entry requirements, you will be notified in writing to attend a second selection test which is the Computerised Pilot Selection Test (CPSS)

Qn: What is the purpose of the CPSS testing?

Ans: The CPSS test consist of a battery of tests which will assess your personal aptitude, cognitive abilities and pyschomotor skills (hands and legs co-ordination) for pilot training.

Qn: Will there be guidelines given for the test?

Ans: Yes, detailed instructions will be given.

Qn: What is the duration of the CPSS test and where is it held?

Ans: It is a five-hour test conducted at the SAF Careers Centre at Depot Road, CMPB.

Qn: Assuming that I have successfully completed the CPSS test, what is the next stage of selection?

Ans: If you have passed the CPSS test, you will be scheduled for a thorough medical examination at our medical centres. In particular, our aviation doctors will look out for symptoms like asthma, hypertension, migraine and astigmatism, as these conditions may render a person unsuitable for pilot training.

Qn: Should I be mindful of my diet before attending the medical examinations?

Ans: You should eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water before the medical examinaion. You should also abstain from using earphones, discman or walkman. Exposure to loud noises may affect your ability to hear low decibel sounds.

Qn: Is the medical examination important?

Ans: Yes, it is important because the outcome will determine your medical fitness and suitability for flying.

Qn: Besides the CPSS and the medical examinations, will there be any other tests which I must pass to qualify for pilot training?

Ans: No. However, you will be required to attend the Pilot Selection Interview, where you will be presented to the Pilot Selection Board.

Qn: Who are the members of the Selection Board?

Ans: The Chairman of the Pilot Selection Board is Commander of Flying Training School, with senior officers from FTS and HQ RSAF as members.

Qn: What is the waiting time between the day of application and the end of the entire selection process ?

Ans: The entire selection process will take about three to four months to complete.

Qn: Does it mean that I will commence pilot training once I have passed the selection process?

Ans: Besides passing the selection process, you are also required to attend BMT and perform well enough to be selected for officer cadet training.

Qn: How long is the Airgrading and Pilot Training Course?

Ans: It is a two-month course and you will be training in Tamworth, Australia. The following Training Road Map illustrates the stages of Pilot Training.

BMT: 10 weeks
Tamworth Airgrading: 2 months
Tri-Service Term: 1 month
Air Force Service Term: 2 months
Pearce Basic Flying Phase: 10 months
Advanced Flying Phase: 11 months

Qn: Are there any sponsorships for tertiary education?

Ans: The University Cadet Pilot Training Scheme (UCPTS) is specially designed to sponsor qualified RSAF pilots for tertiary education at the local universities.

Qn: If I have already served my National Service, do I still qualify for the Joint Poly-SAF Diploma Sponsorship?

Ans: Yes, the JPSDS is open to those who are serving or have completed their national service.
